Emotional Manipulation
I am so, so, so angry right now. I am angry that someone took advantage of my kindness, tried to manipulate my feelings to make me feel sorry for them. I am angry that this person didn’t take the hint and followed me to the checkout line and wouldn’t let me get to my car. I am angry that I feel that I’m supposed to not feel this way because this person is mentally ill. However, this person is still a man who is almost twice my age and tried to intimidate me based on my appearance and our pre-existing relationship (cashier-customer.) [Read More]

yay me
It’s not very often I brush off negative commentary directed towards my hair. Sadly, wearing my hair natural offends, upsets, confuses, bothers, frustrates, and annoys a number of individuals. If a black boy or a Jew with my standard fro wears his hair out, he’s cool. I do it, I’m angry, a lesbian, an angry closeted lesbian, lazy, and my personal favorite, a refugee look alike. Yes, indeed. Once upon a time, an individual said my hair made me look like an African refugee. [Read More]

Men in Women’s Magazines: Cut the Crap
I touched on this briefly in my analysis of the February 2012 issue of Glamour a while back, but I’ve been noticing the way male celebrities speak to general & men’s magazines and the way they speak to women’s magazines even more so lately. [Read More]

Destination Wedding Favors
Planning a destination wedding is easier in some ways, and in others, it’s trickier. I ended up shlepping everything I wanted and needed with me down to Mexico in suitcases. And figuring out exactly what those decor items were going to be took months of research and planning, and stress. And I knew that I wanted something thoughtful, yet practical for the wedding favors, but food related items were out of the question, because people were travelling. So I thought why not give something small that was a reflection of me, and relevant to the wedding: a romantic poetry book, and my fave natural sunscreen! [Read More]

Fearless Friday
TGIF to all you lovely ladies out there!
Here’s a suggestion for this beautiful Friday afternoon…Why not try something new and take a risk this weekend? Now I am not talking about sky diving or bungee jumping (but if that’s your thing, power to you!) However, I am talking about going out on a limb in some way in relation to dating. If you tend to go home on a Friday night, get into your pjs, and watch Sleepless in Seattle for the hundredth time, how about trying something new tonight? Why not say yes to drinks with co-workers, or go to a baseball game? [Read More]

Amendment One—What You Need To Know
Amendment One has passed in North Carolina by a margin of 58-42. The measure modifies the constitution to ban gay marriage completely in the state. Although same-sex marriage was already illegal, Amendment One lets North Carolina join the ranks of California, Ohio, Texas and twenty-seven other states that have already added this measure to their state constitutions.
Aside from this backwards and troubling idea that same-sex marriage is an awful thing, Amendment One’s vague wording could hurt a larger number of people than the authors of the measure had intended. [Read More]

Comic Book Movies: So Close, Yet So Far Off About Women
My brother and I went to see The Avengers today, and while it was super awesome, there was something that kept bothering me throughout the film—the madonna/whore complex placed on the two main female characters, Natasha Romanoff/The Black Widow (Scarlett Johannson) and Agent Maria Hill (Cobie Smulders.) When we first see Maria Hill, almost every inch of her is covered, her hair is neat, and she works with the agency that assembles the Avengers. When we see The Black Widow, she is near undressed, and has loose, red curly hair. hmmmm. Can you tell who is supposed to be the brainy one and who is supposed to be the sexy one? Now, to be fair, both of them get to have awesome fight scenes and aren’t always running away in peril—in fact, the Black Widow has a major part in the film’s resolution, but it’s like, come on, filmmakers, really? The marketing is good at not making this a thing (see photo above,) so why can’t the actual film? [Read More]

I would like for this post to be meaningful to a lot of people but it’s more for me than it is for anybody else. I have gone through a heap load of things since I’ve last written on LivLuna. I met a man who could possibly be my soul mate, I have a steady job ( I have a job period…. hallelujah), I’m preparing to go to grad school and pursue a masters in school counseling, I’m pursuing dance more seriously and last but not least I know what direction I want my life to take both career wise and romantically. I had lost a friend in whom I thought was going to be in my life for a very long time and I have gained my life back ( my old friends, made new friends and I’m back to being the old me, just a more improved version).
It sounds like everything is peachy keen huh! well not exactly. [Read More]
