Hey, Vanity Fair—Not Every Actress in Hollywood is White, Thin, Young and Blonde!
Vanity Fair, we need to have a chat. This topic comes up every. Year. In regard to your Hollywood issue. You know people are pissed about this, so why oh why must you pick the same type of actress—young, white, thin and (mostly) blonde—to grace the cover? These are not the only actresses in movies, believe it or not. Okay, yes, Jessica Chastain was in The Help—barely. Why not feature Viola Davis or Octavia Spencer, who was nominated for an Oscar for “Best Supporting Actress” for her role as Minny? Instead of Jennifer Lawrence, who was barely in Like Crazy and is doing the successor to the Twilight franchise, The Hunger Games, why not feature Melissa McCarthy? She was also nominated for the “Best Supporting Actress” Oscar, for her role in Bridesmaids? It’s rare for a comedic character actress to be nominated for such an award. They may not be white (save for McCarthy,) thin, young or blonde, but they’re still actresses—successful actresses, at that. They’re still a part of Hollywood. [Read More]
